A grey gameboard and lots of urban buildings and ruins are all well and good. But all you really get are two levels of height over the whole table. We found the games on that kind of board a bit too 2-dimensional after a while. To achieve a more three-dimensional feel we needed building blocks that can be stacked to different heights, and preferably lots of them.
To add variation to these I made slot-in balconies and bridge connectors.
All the pieces are based on the same size to maximise compatibility. The building levels are 20cm square, some with one or more cut corners. Bridges and walkways are all multiples of 10cm, this way I made sure all our street tiles would fit in.
